Hard to believe that about a decade ago, the idea of shopping using your phone probably never even crossed your mind. But now, a new Nielsen survey reveals that more consumers are eager to test out new apps and mobile shopping experiences.

The survey revealed that about 45 million smartphone owners in the US used at least one app from the Shopping/Commerce category in June 2012, and accessed shopping apps an average of more than 17 times during the month.

The biggest winners went to shopping apps like eBay (13 million unique users) and and Amazon (12 million unique users). And daily deals sites such as Groupon and LivingSocial weren't too far behind, attracting more than 10 million users in that month alone.

In response to the data, Don Kellogg, Director of Telecom Insights at Nielsen, said this shows that “Retailers are finding that consumers are willing to use smartphone apps to enhance their shopping experience, and this data shows usage of shopping apps is growing.”
