While we're all for encouraging young girls to study and pursue a career in science, this clip released by the European Commission has not exactly appealed to its target audience. The video is part of the “Science: It’s a Girl Thing!” campaign, and shows a lab being transformed into a runway with three women strutting around in heels while a male scientist in a lab coat stares in complete disbelief. As you can imagine, many folks were taken aback by how condescending the video came across. Astronomer Dr. Meghan Gray posted her own video, saying that she was “disappointed that this video was thought to be appropriate,” and that the video connected girls to fashion and makeup instead of science:
The amount of backlash was so significant, that the video was ended up being removed from the campaign.
